There’s probably a piece of jewelry that’s special to your heart. It’s become a part of you. You wear it to special occasions. Whether it’s a diamond-studded bracelet or a sapphire pendant, one thing is true: this piece of jewelry is your most prized possession.
And you would do anything to protect it. That’s why trinket/jewelry boxes play an important role in your life. The jewelry box you have has been handed down in your family for generations.
But have you ever wondered what jewelry boxes were like throughout history? Let’s take a look:
During the Stone Age
Well, it’s called the “Stone” Age for a reason! While precious stones weren’t common, the form of jewelry was wearing pebbles and pieces of mammoth tusks around the neck.
The Stone Age was simple but cavemen had a talent of cutting, buffing, and molding various materials into beautiful adornments. But just because jewelry was common during the Stone Age, doesn’t mean the first jewelry box was invented back then!
When the first jewelry box was invented is debatable. But one thing is for sure: as humans evolved, so did the tools they used to create jewelry. Jewelry boxes are often associated with Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians used decorated caskets to keep all their valuables safe. They would bury their jewelry with mummies as well.
The 16th Century
By 16th century, jewelry boxes started to become common amongst royalty and the nobles. Henry Tudor was known to gift jewelry boxes to his potential suitors to woo them.
The craftsmen would work tirelessly to ensure that each and every detail was perfect. Handcrafted jewelry boxes became the norm.
The 18th Century
It wasn’t until Queen Victoria’s reign that trinket boxes were introduced. Musical jewelry boxes became the norm and people of status would purchase them to keep on their vanity tables.
Modern Day Trinket Boxes
Modern day trinket boxes come in different shapes, sizes and designs. The most popular ones are studded with rhinestones. They make for the perfect gift as they can be personalized. They’re synonymous with class and beauty, and when gifting one to someone, you can fill them with jewelry, chocolates, and even heartfelt notes to show much you appreciate them.
